Every image on my website has got an Alt text added to them to ensure that the images will show up on a screen reader. All of the Alt texts are in a lot of depth to allow users with low vision to fully understand the image.
When choosing out colours, I knew that I needed the website to feature a high contrast colour scheme. I wanted to feature a colour switcher so those who find light mode easier to read, and those who require dark mode are also able to enjoy the website. This feature will be coming in 2023 so keep your eyes peeled!
In terms of fonts, I decided to go for a simple sans-serif font for easy readability and to make the user experience seamless as the text reads better. The font that I chose out for this was Poppins Medium which was a perfect font to meet this criteria.
I have added a simple white background to the menu bar to increase the readability of it against the different header images featured on my website. I have also included icons to help people who have cognitive disabilities to be able to access the content. The icons I have chosen out are universally used and easy to understand so that there is instant recognition. This also helps people who may have reduced vision or dyslexia to be able to navigate the site quickly without having to take the extra time to read and process the information.
Every text box has a shadow behind it. This is to help all users to understand where the content is located. This text box also helps people to stay focused when reading information as your brain has a clear path to follow that it has to stay within.
One example of where this has been used by other organisations is with Microsoft when they implemented their focus mode in Microsoft Word. This allows the user to highlight the section that they are reading, close all toolbars, and not get distracted by notifications. After becoming an avid user of this feature, I knew I wanted to include a similar feature on my website. By having a different coloured background or a simple image behind the text, your brain gets the stimulation that it needs to stay on track but not enough to make you distracted, making it the perfect way to optimise your efficiency whilst reading. This is especially important for my website where there is large quantities of text for example when talking about the work I've done.
